The Disney World Logistics Model
Adopting from the Best for Success
Walt Disney knew that the best way to efficiently transport goods and
services through a crowded theme park was to build that park atop a
network of tunnels. Disneyland themes were all about immersing visitors
in a fantasyland, and the magic of the fantasy would quickly be broken
by trailers bearing foodstuffs or emergency staff racing through the
crowds. The key to the park's success, Disney knew, was to hide reality
from visitors. The underground facilities allows goods and staff
to travel from place to place quickly and out of the public eye.
In order to achieve the same logistical efficiency, the development
proposed will use a similar strategy. Tunnels will be built to
interconnect the entire major development features and everything will
be accessible quickly via tunnels.
A central Distribution Center will be open 24 hours a day with all
truck traffic restricted to the Distribution Center from 7 PM to 7 AM.
This Distribution Center will also contain a Postal Center.
The entire facility will cater to Carts, Scooters/Mopeds, and Bicycles,
as well as being pedestrian friendly everywhere. To create a
development the size of the one proposed and impose a restriction on
the types of vehicles allowed presents some unique problems.
With island villages, narrow roadways, and prohibiting large vehicles
like trucks and automobiles, the critical questions are:
- If there is a fire or an emergency how do police, fire, and
rescue respond?
- How are the logistics of their responses coordinated?
Clearly, some innovative answers are required, which is at the
heart of everything about Mathias Island at Fortune Bay.
This project builds on the innovative thinking that nothing
is impossible!
